Essay: The West Kowloon Cultural District

The West Kowloon Cultural District is one of its kind in the region. Located on 40 hectares of reclaimed land in the West Kowloon District in Hong Kong, the idea is so innovative as to be a major tourist attraction site for the city. In 2001 after having developed the idea for the District, the Hong Kong government launched a major international competition calling for proposals as to its development (www.hab.gov.hk, 2010). Numerous proposals were received from different people and firms in different countries. Finally, the government selected the five most appealing proposals, which were then awarded different prizes. The winner, a design from Norman Foster and Partners of Britain was deemed new, different, and iconic. The canopy that characterized the design was such that it would give a unique identifying look to Hong Kong, much like the Sydney Opera House does to Sydney.
