The author’s narrative gives us an overview of the tragedy and seriousness of nutrition and health in Mali at the time she was there. She gives the reader insight on the reality of the problems that the people faced in this region. She narrates on how some of the cultural problems resulted in her conflicting with the residents in this region.
She offers an anecdote of a scenario concerning how the people in this region did not have good eating habits. This is revealed in her conversation with one of the co-workers who was a resident. Dettwyler (1994) tells us how she found their culture on eating habits very different. “In Dogo,” the co-worker explained, “people believe that good food is wasted on children. They don’t appreciate its good taste or the way it makes you feel. Also, they haven’t worked hard to produce the food. They have their whole lives to work for good food for themselves, when they get older. Old people deserve the best food, because they’re going to die soon” (Dettwyler, pg 143-144)
