Essay: African American response to color line

Color line was a concept that depicted the segregation of African Americans from the native white entrenched in the custom and law. The barriers were along social economic status and racial prejudice. The practice was prevalent in 1920’s and it elicited various responses from the African Americans at the time. Firstly, color line marked the solidarity of the African Americans in the early 20th century. The few professionals united to address the welfare of the black community particularly in the health sector. All black medical practitioners joined hands to offer free services to their counterparts who could not access them. This was significantly felt during the influenza epidemic where the white doctors and social scientists still believed that the blacks were biologically inferior[1].
