Essay: The Concept of Terrorism

Prior to the terrorist attacks of 9/11 in the United States, the concept of terrorism rarely hit the headlines and many people remained ignorant of the vice. Terrorism refers to the use of violence to agitate for social, religious, or political goals.

The primary concern of the terrorists is to instill fear in a cross section of a population by making grotesque actions most of which are horrific. This leads to spread of fear of similar attacks by many people who find it inevitable to comply with the demands of the groups. According to Narveson (2002), the concept of terrorism is synonymous to political violence since many of the perpetrators of the violence hold the major goal of seeing some transformation and changes in the status quo.
