Essay: The Themes of Existentialism

Sample Essay

Introduction

One of the main struggles in the human person is to attain independence and self-mastery. Any individual will frown upon any attempt hindering him/her to realize his/her potential. Or better still, self-actualization and self-realization are the highest needs that a human person can ever attain. These needs rank the highest compared to other needs. In this study an analysis of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs shall be considered to elaborate further on this point. In line with this, the views of Soren Kierkegaard, Heidegger, Sartre, Nietzsche, and Ferdinand de Saussure shall be suitably considered.

An analysis of the novel on Sophie’s choice will also be carried out and as a result develop a synthesis with regard to existentialism. In general, this study aims at understanding the major themes in existentialism in light of Sophie’s choice and in the long run illustrates its implication to the human family.
