Essay: A Good Writer Must be Objective
Should a good writer must be objective? Similarly, a good writer ought to be open-minded and objective in order to avoid their personal convictions; beliefs and feelings compromise their work.
Take, for instance, a writer commissioned to write a cover story about terrorists and the 9/ 11 attacks. Even in view of how personal the incident may have been, it is imperative that any given writer retains their objectivity.
The cardinal rule of writing in such an instance requires that a writer be as ruthless and provocative as the event itself. It is prudent that you evaluate the issue from the perspective of both the terrorist and the victim. Once you put yourself in the terrorists’ shoes, you may begin to fathom where they are coming from.
The rule of thumb – as my professor keeps insisting – is do not judge the character/ perpetrator if you want to retain objectivity. Had Truman Capote judged the murderers, he wouldn’t have received international acclamation in the New Yorker. Noah Shapiro of the New Yorker reckons that the greatest setback towards becoming a great writer is becoming irrelevant.
In literature, as in fashion, you cannot afford to be irrelevant. Once it appears as though your work is ‘too safe,’ it is always advisable to try something new, dangerous.
