The abolition of slavery and the slave trade was the key trigger of the civil war, as the South remained adamant to relinquish their slaves.
In the early 19th century, a section of Southern states led by South Carolina issued their formal secession declaration from the United States. The period that ensued was marred by a series of armed conflicts between the Confederacy (south) and the Union (north) historically dubbed the American Civil War.
Their bid to secede, however, flopped dramatically after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 subsequently ordering the release of all slaves.
The proclamation marked the inception of the Reconstruction Era, which was a period of restoration and rebuilding of the then war-torn nation.
