In the early 19th century, a section of Southern states led by South Carolina issued their formal secession declaration from the United States. The period that ensued was marred by a series of armed conflicts between the Confederacy (south) and the Union (north) historically dubbed the American Civil War. Their bid to secede, however, flopped dramatically after Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 subsequently ordering the release of all slaves.
