Essay: Challenges during Group Counseling
Group Counseling presents a counselor with a myriad of ethical challenges that may hinder effective counseling. Primarily, it is apparent that ethical consideration in selecting group members for a specific session is a challenge.
As a counselor, it would be unethical to discriminate against some members from joining a group notwithstanding the fact that the rest of the may feel uncomfortable in the same group.
To mitigate this risk, I would ensure proper selection of individuals by considering the similarities of their psychological health services.
Second, it is quite challenging to deal with the ethical principle of maximum participation for all members. Facilitating individuals to participate in full raises the question of coercion and involuntary participation where some members may not show a willingness to participate in the entire process.
Corey & Corey (2006) elucidate that a lack of consistency in participation by some members could render the process ineffective and unsuccessful since it is through participation that a counselor gathers information from members.
