The crime statistics in the United States is annually published by the federal bureau of investigation in the uniform crime that had been reported by the police, the American bureau of justice statistics conducts the annual national crime victimization survey which does capture crime that is not reported to the police (US Bureau of Justice Statistics 2004).

The country’s overall crime rate is normally displayed in fifty indices. The violent crime index comprises of the homicide, forcible rape, robbery and assault. The property crime index consists of the burglary, theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. Statistics for index offenses are usually available for the country as a whole, all fifty states and all participating communities within the United States of America (Krug, Powell and Dahlberg 1998).
