On the contrary, the wellness model focuses on the achievement and maintenance of health before illness sets in. Its approach is preventive, rather than curative. The body in this case is viewed as a whole and every aspect of the human being is considered as a contributor to health or illness. It is democratic since it gives an individual the choice to take charge of his/her health.
It is in this regard that I believe that society today needs to go the ‘wellness model’ way. “Prevention is better than cure” is a saying that, if followed, would solve many of our health problems. Comparing the lives that our forefathers lived and the life that we live now, it is evident that preventive measures would go a long way in providing us with the optimum health that we so desire and that the benefits of this approach would be immeasurable.
