The major U.S. military operations – land, sea, and air – in the European Theater from May 1944 to April 1945 were characterized by seven operations with one remaining unofficial. They included the northern France, southern France, Rhineland, Normandy, central Europe, Ardennese-Alsece, and the Lorraine (unofficial) campaigns. The Normandy invasion was a major battle carried out in France by allied forces from Canada, UK, Free France (Basil, 64). The US was actively involved in this battle which officially begun on 6 June 1944.

It was believed that a soon as Normandy could be secured, the fall of the Nazi would begin. Under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the battle begun with parachute landings followed by air attacks and naval bombardments on five beaches. The US used its 82nd and 101st airborne, the V and VII corps, and the first, forth and twenty-ninth infantry divisions. By June 11, 326,547 troops, 104,428 tons of different military assortments and 54,186 vehicles had arrived (Basil, 99). By forth June, one million men had landed ready for the battle. The d-day had these military groups stationed at various strategic positions ready for attacks.
