Further, the wholly irrational evolution and promotion of divisions and insults is rooted in misguided “group” tactics and “distortions in moral, cognitive and emotional processes.” (277)
With the result of fueling conflicts, the purpose of individual and collective demonstrations of polarization and vilification is an irrational pursuit to “win,” influence or succeed at any cost. Throughout the tactical induction of polarization (divisions) and vilification (insults), depraved power and depraved morality are distributed. These tactics and distributions are provided as a cause of desperate urgency but not to intentionally provoke a “conflict.” (pg. 277) While not the cause of conflict, polarizations and vilifications are fueled by their traits to intensify sporadic “insults, shame and anger” that result from unintentional “feelings of distrust and contempt.” (277) The influence of polarization and vilification on the individual leads to a more collective and more public demonstration of these concept s and their destructive effects. “Forgetting values and goals” is a resulting destructive effect of individual (private) and collective (public) demonstrations of polarization and vilification. Polarization and vilification, guided by the influence of contextual differences in emotion, exist in an inappropriate exchange between the “rational and irrational.”(277)
