There are several experimental evidence that the environment has some interactive effects on genes and development in children. Absence of a single gene alters the effects it is supposed to cause and this may result in changes in physical aspects that are demonstrated by growth and developed. Absence of a gene responsible for enzyme production causes a disease called phenylyketonuria (PKU) (Fabes and  Martin, 2008, p. 28).

This leads to a mental impairment since phenylalanine cannot be converted to tyrosine. Introduction of phenylalanine in the diet restored a Childs normal brain functioning indicating the environment and in this case through the diet or food available to eat, can have a very influential role in child development.
