Essay: Income Of Cohabiting Couples

Sample Essay

The level of income of cohabiting couples is usually lower than that of married couples. A research carried out in 2000 showed that only 15% of men who cohabit earn over $50,000 in comparison with 27% of those who are married.

In addition, only 6% of married men earn less than $10,000 in comparison with 12% of the cohabiting men (Fitch, et al, 2005). Considering this research, one can conclude that people have changed their attitudes that marriage is a mutual relationship that is meant to last for better or for worse. They therefore prefer cohabiting to amass wealth before settling as husband and wife. This further proves that the old ideas of family formation are changing drastically with the high rate of cohabitation increase.
