Essay: Gandhi’s interpretation of Chauri-Chaura
Gandhi’s interpretation of this event was that Indians in the remote Chauri-Chaura were not mature enough politically. He also interpreted that he was himself to blame for his role in inciting the Indians to attack and that God had been kind to him but he had failed to prevent the killing of other human beings.
This, in his own feelings, did not necessitate the course taken even if there had been a grave injustice done to the Indian peasantry. It is this assumption that made Gandhi call off the non-cooperation movement since he saw the riots to be a tool of killing India’s reputation abroad. His interpretation however seemed to derail the quest by the Indian masses to have better lives devoid of capitalism although to the masses, he was one f the petty-bourgeois who supported the imperialists.
