The role of a registered nurse in the hospital includes but is not exclusively limited to alleviating the pain and treating the physical illnesses of the patients. We also play a role in lessening the patient’s apprehensions by communicating with them and sometimes even develop a bond with them. One such patient was Mr. Smith*, an elderly patient admitted for management of Blood pressure. One day while on duty, I noticed him sitting in bed wiping his tears. I decided to sit beside him for a while and inquire into the reasons. Reluctant at first but later, he told me that it had been three days since he had come to the hospital and no one from his family had come to inquire about his health. Further conversation with him revealed that the divorced father of 4 had been living alone and his children had not been able to find time to visit him in more than a year. He felt lonely all the time. His children thought of him as a burden and had requested for him to move out. Abandoned by his own children he quality of life he was spending wasn’t good.
