Chiropractors practice their profession mainly on people it back pains and the practice is generally referred to as adjustment (Souvlis et al. 2005, p. 396). The American Pain Society and the American College of Physicians included spinal manipulations in their guidelines in 2007 as an alternative method that the problem could be approached with if self-care was ineffective. Ferreira et al. (2006, p.596) assert this to the fact that it was after it emerged that spinal manipulation provides relief only after three months of application. The studies further revealed that relief could continue for a period of up to one year.
The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) in the United States carried out a study on effectiveness of the therapy and discovered that relief could last for an average of 18months after application (Suter et al. 2005, p.671). However, the study revealed that in 20 percent of these individuals, relief could not hold for up to 18 months irrespective of the method used top apply this therapy. This study concluded that spinal manipulations are as effective as any other acceptable conventional treatments to lower back pains.
