To start with, an optimist by the name, The Marquis de Condorcet and a pessimist by the name of Thomas Malthus have been arguing about this issue.

Thomas Malthus in his theory of population was concerned with the economic and social changes, which would arise because of overpopulation in the world. He even argued that while populations increased in geometric proportions, the food only increased in arithmetic proportions and this posed a threat since the food would soon not be enough for the increasing population.
